AI scoring from your photo: what it needs, what it sends and what it does not do
For some targets the Shooter app cannot find the holes on the phone. For those it can send the photo to an AI service, which marks where the holes are. Shooter then scores those positions with its own scoring rules, and you check the result like any other scan.
This article goes deeper on that one function: when AI is offered, what it needs, what is sent and kept, and what you see when it does not work. The overview of both routes and the first 10 free scans is in scoring a target from a photo. The cards that score on the phone are in scoring on the phone, offline.
What the AI does, and what it does not
It finds the holes, Shooter scores them
The AI service’s job is to find where the holes are. It is told which target you picked, so it knows the rings and the size of the aiming mark. The ring value of each shot and the total are then worked out by Shooter’s own scoring rules, from those positions.
The result is a proposal. The shots appear on the target and you can move, delete or add shots before you save, as with any scan. The app gives no figure for how often the AI finds every hole, so look at each one. The saved data records that the shots came from AI.
When AI is offered
Automatically, or from the menu
- Automatically, on a card marked “Free AI” in the target list, when you are online and “Share target photos” is on. On a card marked “AI credits” the app does not start AI by itself: you place the shots yourself, or choose “Analyze with AI” from the menu, which costs 1 credit. Cards that score on the phone say “Works offline”. The on-phone detector still runs on the photo first.
- From the menu on the result page, “Analyze with AI”. It is offered on most scans, but it still needs “Share target photos” on and an internet connection. The menu shows whether it costs 1 credit; on a card that already scores on the phone it does. The menu offers it for the whole series at once, and it is not offered in Scope Mode.
You pick the target first, because the AI is told its rings. While it works, the screen reads “Analyzing with AI…” with a progress bar and a Cancel button. Keep the app open until it is done.
What it needs
Internet, sharing on, an AI allowance or a credit
- An internet connection for every AI scan. Without one, the app keeps the shots from the phone’s detector and you place or move shots by hand. With “Share target photos” on, the photo may be uploaded later to help improve detection; it is not AI-scored afterwards.
- The “Share target photos” setting turned on. If it is not set, the app asks before the first AI scan: “Let AI read your target?”. Declining leaves you with the on-phone shots and placing them yourself.
- A first contact with Shooter’s server. On a brand-new install that has never been online, AI is not available yet.
- No account. The app uses a random identifier made on your phone, and on Android the Play Store must be recent enough, otherwise the app says so.
- An AI allowance, or a credit. The scan counts among your first 10 free scans. On top of that, each target has a limited allowance of AI scans that costs no credit, partly shared with other users, and there is a daily limit. A scan that gives no result is not counted against your 10. After the allowance, an AI scan costs 1 credit.
Credits are bought on their own and are not part of Pro. Pro does not pay for AI scans, and a credit does not lift the limit of 10 free scans. If a scan turns out to cost a credit when it looked free, the app asks first. If your balance is zero, the screen for buying credits opens.
What leaves your phone
The photo, to score it
- The photo goes to Shooter’s server and from there to an AI service that the privacy policy names. When the app has found the target, it sends the straightened crop of the target, otherwise the original photo. The phone prepares the photo before sending it: it converts HEIC and reduces very large photos.
- The photo and the AI’s hole positions may be stored on Shooter’s servers, linked to your random device identifier and not to your name, to review the result and to extend the targets the app supports. Once enough photos are collected for a target, the analysis still runs but the photo is not kept.
- A small technical record of each request is kept for billing and abuse prevention. The privacy policy says it has no automatic expiry today.
- The history on your phone keeps the series and the shots, and records in the saved data that the shots came from AI. It does not keep the photo.
With “Share target photos” off, no photo leaves your phone. You can change the setting at any time under Profile, Privacy & terms. Usage statistics and crash reports go out as the privacy policy describes, without your photos or shot data.
When it does not work
What you see, and what you can do
When an AI scan fails, the sheet reads “AI scoring unavailable” with a short reason and a “Score without AI” button. “Try again” is offered only when trying again can help. If the card is in training, or you are offline, the sheet is instead titled “Score it yourself”, says the line in the table and offers “Annotate it myself”.
| Cause | What you see |
|---|---|
| Daily limit reached | “You’ve used all your AI scans for today. Try again tomorrow.” |
| AI paused or switched off | “AI scanning is paused for today. Try again tomorrow.” |
| The card is in training, or you are offline | “We can’t auto-score this target right now. Place your shots yourself.” |
| The AI could not read the photo | “The AI couldn’t read this photo. Try a clearer, straight-on shot.” |
| Service or network trouble | “AI scoring is temporarily unavailable.” |
The privacy policy says a credit is used only when an analysis returns a presentable result, and not when it fails. A failed scan can still use up that day’s allowance of AI scans. Cancel drops the result on your phone, but a request that is already sent may still run on the server.
What it does not do
No offline, no guarantee
- It does not work without internet, and it has no fallback of its own beyond the phone’s detector and placing shots by hand.
- It does not decide the score. The positions come from the AI, the scoring from Shooter’s rules.
- It does not promise that every hole is found, and it gives no figure for how often it is right. Look at the result before you save.
- It does not tell you whether your score meets any requirement.
Frequently asked questions
4 questions
Does AI scoring cost anything?
The first 10 scans are free, whichever way they are scored. Some targets are marked “Free AI” in the target list; the number of AI scans on those is limited, and after them an AI scan costs 1 credit. Pro does not cover credits. The card in the target list shows which case applies.
Does AI scoring need internet?
Yes, every time. Cards that score on the phone do not, see scoring on the phone, offline.
Is my photo kept?
With “Share target photos” on, the photo and the AI’s hole positions may be stored on Shooter’s servers, linked to a random device identifier and not to your name. With it off, no photo leaves your phone. Your history on the phone does not keep the photo either way.
What if the AI misses a hole?
Add it yourself on the result page before you save. You can also move or delete any shot the AI placed.
