Federation badges in the app: ready-made requirements, checked off as you shoot

A shooting badge usually asks for a score a number of times, on a particular target, sometimes in the same year. Keeping that in your head, or in a notebook, is where progress gets lost. In the Shooter app you add the badges you are working towards, and every series you log is checked against them.

The app counts your own results against the requirements. It does not award anything: a badge is the federation’s to give, with whatever conditions it sets. This article goes through what the app counts, what it knows about each federation, and what it leaves out. The cards the badges attach to are in the target catalogue.

In short

Add a badge, shoot, watch it fill

You add a badge, either one of your federation’s ready-made ones or your own, and the app shows how many of the series you need you have shot so far, as 2/3 for example. When the count reaches the number the requirement asks for, the badge shows as “earned”, which only means that your own series reached the count. Everything is worked out on your phone from the series you logged, scanned or typed.

Which federations it knows

Fourteen bodies in eight countries

The app has ready-made badge programmes from fourteen bodies in eight countries. Which you are offered depends on the region you chose in the app, and a region with no programme can still make its own badges.

SwedenSPSF, SvSF
GermanyDSB, BDMP, KB

Besides these, the app has classification ladders for 10 m air pistol for many more countries, stored as a percentage of the top score. The tier names are the federation’s own, in its own language, and the colours are the app’s own, from gold for the hardest tier on down, and mean nothing the federation says.

How to add them

From the badges page or a discipline
  1. Open “Badges”. With no badges yet, the main button is “Add federation badges”. Later, press “Add another badge” and choose “Federation badges”.
  2. Pick the body if there are several, and the variant that fits you, such as a weapon group or an age class. Each option has a short description. Tick the tiers you want and press “Add”, which shows how many you ticked.
  3. Or choose “Your own badge”: pick the number of shots, the score and how many times.
  4. On a discipline’s page, “My badges” opens the badges for that discipline only.

Adding a badge also puts its target in your own list of targets, and a tier you have already added shows as “Added”.

How a series counts

Same card, same length, enough points

The app counts per series. A series counts toward a badge when it is on the same card as the badge, or on a card that is the same paper under another name, when it has the same number of shots as the requirement, and when its total is at least the required score. One series counts for every tier it clears, so a series that reaches gold also counts for silver and bronze. The count stops at the number of times the badge asks for.

  • Scores are counted in whole rings. A session scored in tenths contributes its whole-ring sum, so a decimal score does not inflate your progress.
  • A requirement over a whole course is treated as one series of that many shots. Log the whole course as one series, or it will not match.
  • A badge that resets every year counts only series from the current calendar year and starts again on 1 January. Others stay earned once earned, even if you delete sessions later.
  • If you change a badge’s target, shots, score, times or yearly reset, its earned mark is cleared and the app counts again.

If a badge has no matching series at all, the app suggests that your series may be on another target or have a different number of shots.

The age handicap

Sweden, one badge group, from a birth year

Some federations lower a requirement for older shooters. The app can do this for one group of badges, the Swedish SPSF Pistolskyttemärket precision tests, and for badges you make yourself. You enter a birth year, which is stored on the phone only, and the app takes 1 point off each series from the calendar year after you turn 55, and 2 points from the year after you turn 65, as it encodes the SPSF handbook. Check the federation’s current handbook: the app’s copy only changes with a new version. If your region has no table, or you are younger than the first bracket, you can type a handicap in points per series. It applies to badges you made yourself, not to adopted federation badges, except that SPSF group. The setting is behind the ⋯ menu on the badges page, which appears once you have a badge.

What it does not do

It counts; the federation awards
  • It does not award or order a badge, and it is not connected to any federation. “Earned” in the app means that your own series reached the count.
  • It does not check who shot the series or that anyone saw it. A badge may need a witness, a sanctioned competition, club membership or a particular order of tiers. The app does not check any of that.
  • It leaves out what it cannot express as a score on one card: badges that need several cards or several competitions.
  • For the Swedish Precisionsskyttemärket, the app uses the six-series total divided by six and rounded up, per five-shot series, so the numbers are not the ones printed on the badge.
  • It does not update the requirements by itself. They come with the app, and a new table arrives with a new version.

Read “earned” as “I have the scores”. Apply to your federation or club for the badge itself.

Where the numbers come from

The federation’s own documents

Each programme is written by hand from the federation’s own document, with its edition and page recorded in the code. One value is derived rather than printed: the Precisionsskyttemärket figure above. If a federation changes its table, the app’s copy changes only with a new version, so check the federation’s current rules before you rely on a number.

Frequently asked questions

4 questions

Does the app give me the badge?

No. It shows that your series reach the requirement. The badge itself comes from the federation or your club, on its own conditions.

Do typed-in sessions count?

Yes. Series you typed count the same as scanned ones, as long as they are on the right card with the right number of shots.

Why does a series not count toward my badge?

The usual reasons are another card, a different number of shots in the series, or a score under the requirement. For a yearly badge, a series from an earlier year does not count.

Can I make a badge for something no federation has?

Yes. “Your own badge” lets you choose the shots, the score and how many times, on any discipline.
