Log your shots by hand: a ring keypad, no photo needed
Not every session is photographed: the paper may be gone, the card may not be one the app scores, or you simply want the score down. The Shooter app has a ring keypad for that. You tap each shot in, series by series, and the session goes into your history like any other.
This article goes through how a session is entered, saved and resumed, and what a typed session counts for. What it cannot give you is anything that needs to know where a shot landed: that takes a photo of the target.
How to start
From the discipline page
- Open the discipline you shot. Under the main button for a photo there is “Record shots manually”.
- Set up the session in the sheet that opens: the course, shots per series and number of series, practice or match, scoring in whole rings or tenths, and whether it was a club session. Under the details you can add range, gun and ammunition.
- On the next screen, tap each shot on the keypad. The details behind the ⋮ in the header are the date, gun, range and notes.
The number of series and shots are set in the first sheet and cannot be changed on the keypad screen. The date can be today or earlier, never later.
The keypad
X, then the rings down to 0
The keys are X and then the card’s rings from the highest down to 0. In whole rings, one tap is one shot. In tenths, you tap the ring and then the tenth, so ring 10 and 4 is 10.4, or “No decimal” for a whole ring. The shots appear below as chips, the newest series first, with dashed spaces for the shots still to come.
To change a shot, tap its chip and then the right key: the next tap replaces it. There is no way to delete a single shot, only to replace it, so use the right key for every shot.
Saving, stopping and coming back
Close saves half way
The button at the bottom says “Close” until every series is full, and then “Save session”. Closing, the X, the back button and the back swipe save the shots you have entered as a session in progress and leave. If you have entered nothing, nothing is saved, and if saving fails you stay on the screen. It shows up on the home screen under “In Progress”, and “Continue” opens it again with everything restored.
While it is in progress you can change any shot, the date, gun, range and notes. Once you have saved the finished session, the shots can no longer be changed. You can still change the notes and the session type, share it, or delete the whole session.
What a typed session counts for
Totals, trends, days and badge progress
- Your totals, such as sessions, shots fired and the top-ring rate, and your score trends include typed series.
- The training calendar and the range days per gun count them, but a gun must be picked for the days to count for it. See range days per gun.
- Badge progress counts them, in whole rings, even when you typed tenths. See federation badges in the app.
- They appear in your history with a keypad icon instead of a target picture, and in the CSV, the PDF activity log and the backup, with the position columns left empty.
A session still in progress is left out of your totals, trends and range days until it is finished. Its saved full series do already count toward badge progress.
What needs a photo
No positions, no group figures
A typed session has no shot positions, so it has no mean radius, extreme spread or mean point of impact, no heat map, and nothing that reads the pattern of the shots, such as drift or the sight adjustment sheet. Those exist only for a photographed target. The goal and focus streaks in the app also leave typed sessions out.
The keypad is for ring targets. Targets scored as silhouettes or figures, hits and misses, or times cannot be typed in.
Cost, account and internet
Free, no account, offline
Typing a session in does not use the free scans and has no limit on how many sessions or shots you log. It needs no account and no internet: everything is saved on your phone. Until you make a backup, that is the only place it exists.
Frequently asked questions
4 questions
Do typed sessions use up the free scans?
No. Only scans use them. Typing a session in does not.
Can I correct a shot after I have saved the session?
Not the shots. Before the session is finished you can replace any shot. After you save it, you can change its notes and type, or delete it.
Why is there no group size on a typed session?
The app only knows the score of each shot, not where it landed. Group figures need the positions from a scanned target.
Does a typed session count for my range days?
Yes, if a gun is picked on it and the session is finished. See range days per gun.
