Where did you shoot? Save your ranges and tag each session
A range in the Shooter app is a name and a switch for “Home range”, nothing more. There is no map, no address and no position, and the app never asks for your location. You keep a short list of places, and pick one when you set up a session.
This article goes through adding ranges, the home range, tagging a session and where the name ends up. The range name is also printed in the activity log described in range days per gun, and the exports are covered in export your shooting data.
Adding and editing ranges
Profile, My ranges
- Open the Profile tab. In the “Shooter profile” group, tap “My ranges”.
- If you have none yet, the “New shooting range” form opens straight away. Otherwise tap “Add range”.
- Type a name, optionally switch on “Home range”, and tap “Save”.
Those two controls are all the form has. To change a saved range, open it: edits save by themselves, and an empty name is never written. To delete one, use the ⋯ menu on its page or swipe the row in the list. Sessions logged there keep their data.
The home range
One at most, set by you
At most one range is your home range. Switching it on for one clears it on the others. The app never picks a home range for you, and having none is fine. If you delete the home range, no other range takes its place.
The home range has one effect: it is pre-selected when you set up a session. With no home range and exactly one saved range, that range is pre-selected. A choice you made yourself is never overwritten.
Tagging a session
In the Details block
The range is an optional dropdown called “Shooting range” in the collapsed “Details” block when you set up a session, before a scan or a typed session. It is also in the settings sheet on the scan result, so you can choose or change it before the session is saved. The list starts with “No range”, then your ranges in alphabetical order, and ends with “Create new range”, which adds a name without leaving the screen.
A session has one range. If you continue a session you left unfinished, its range comes along.
Where the range name shows up
In the exports, not in the history
Your history lists and the finished session screen do not show the range. You see and change it while you set up or type a session, and the name is printed in the files you export:
- In the CSV of every shot, in the column range_name.
- In the PDF’s list of sessions, after the discipline.
- In the “Place” column of the activity log, which is described in range days per gun.
- In a backup, with the rest of your data.
A session without a range has an empty cell there. If you delete a range, old sessions keep their data and simply show no range name in the exports. The range is not part of a club check-in code.
What it does not do
No map, no statistics per range
There is no location, no photo, no notes and no opening hours on a range. Your statistics and history cannot be filtered or grouped by range. The range name is never sent to a server, and no internet is needed to save or pick a range. The name does appear in the exports and backups you make yourself.
Frequently asked questions
4 questions
Does the app use my location to find the range?
No. It never asks for location. A range is only a name you type, and you pick it yourself.
Will every session in my history show its range?
Not in the history or on the finished session screen. The name is printed in the exports, and only for sessions where you picked a range.
Can I see statistics per range?
No. The statistics have no range filter. You can filter by year, discipline and gun.
What happens to old sessions if I delete a range?
They keep all their data. In the exports they just have no range name.
