Are you getting better? The statistics in the Shooter app
One session says little. A series of them shows whether your average per shot is moving. The Shooter app works this out from the sessions on your phone, per discipline, and shows the group figures of each scan on the result itself.
This article goes through each view, how it is counted, and which ones need shot positions from a scan. Typed sessions feed the scores and the counts, but not the group figures. See logging shots by hand and scoring a target from a photo.
Where the statistics are
On each discipline’s page
The home screen has one tile per discipline in your list, in alphabetical order. A tile shows the target, the total of your last session such as 547/600, and a small trend line over your last 10 sessions. From 3 sessions the line gets a dotted baseline, which is the mean of the sessions shown, and a figure such as +0.4 for the latest session against that mean. Below 3 sessions there is no line.
Tap a tile to open the discipline page. It has three cards to swipe between: Score Trend, Quick Stats and Training Cadence. They cover that discipline’s target paper, all years, every gun and every session type. There is no filter on these cards.
Score Trend
Average per shot, one point per series
Each point is one series: its total divided by the shots per series the course is set up for. A shot the scan did not find therefore lowers the score instead of shortening the series. With one series you see its value and a note that the chart appears from the second series. From two, it is a line chart, and tapping shows the values.
Unlike the other cards, the trend also plots a series from a session that is not finished, as soon as the series is saved. It keeps the newest 1,000 series.
Quick Stats
Nine tiles, each with an explanation
| Tile | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Sessions | Finished sessions. A session is one trip and can hold several series. |
| Series | Finished series. |
| Shots | The saved shot counts added together. |
| Consistency | How little your series scores vary: 100 minus twice their standard deviation in percent, kept between 0 and 100. It needs at least two series. It is not a skill rating. |
| 9–10 Ring | The share of shots with a ring value of 9 or more. |
| Inner ten (X) | The share of shots flagged as inner tens. |
| Worst, Avg, Best | The lowest, the overall average and the highest points per shot among the points on the trend. |
Tap a tile that shows a value for a short explanation. Consistency is worked out from the spread between series totals, not from single shots. The 9–10 Ring tile counts every ring of 9 or higher, which is exact only on targets whose top ring is 10. A dash means the value cannot be computed.
Training Cadence
A calendar of the last 15 weeks
A grid of 15 weeks starting on Monday, with each day tinted by the number of series you shot that day. Today is outlined. Below it the card says how many sessions there are in the grid and how many days this month had shooting. The “sessions” figure counts series, so a session of five series shot in one day adds five. Days are your phone’s local days.
This is a count of shooting days in the app. For range days per gun, see range days per gun.
On every result: comparison and group figures
Earlier sessions, MR, ES and MPI
The summary card of a scanned result shows a line at the top and, under it, the score, the average and the inner tens (or the shot count where the target has no inner ten). The top line compares the session with up to three earlier sessions on the same target and scoring mode, for example “0.4 better than your previous session”. The first one says it is your first session in the discipline. “Best session so far” appears only when the average beats all your other finished sessions on that target and there are at least three of them. It compares you with yourself only.
A scanned result also shows three group tiles. MR is the mean radius, the average distance from the shots to the group’s own centre. ES is the extreme spread, the distance between the two shots furthest apart. MPI is the mean point of impact. Tapping MPI opens the sight adjustment sheet, which gives sight clicks when a gun with click values is attached and the series has at least 5 shots. Lower MR and ES mean a tighter group. They are in millimetres and are worked out from the shot positions you saved, so a misplaced shot changes them.
Typed sessions and scans
Scores count both, positions need a scan
| View | Typed session | Scanned session |
|---|---|---|
| Home tile, Score Trend, Quick Stats, cadence | Counted | Counted |
| Used as an earlier session in the comparison on a scanned result | Yes | Yes |
| The comparison line and “Best session so far” on the result itself | Not shown | Shown |
| MR, ES, MPI and sight clicks | Not available | Available |
The group tiles need shot positions, which only a scan gives. The group figures are shown for each result, but the app has no chart of group size over time. Across sessions, MR appears as a column in the analysis report, see the analysis of your shooting.
What it does not do
No per-gun scores, no goals
- The trend, quick stats and calendar cannot be filtered by gun. The History list and the analysis report can, and they share the same filter, see your shooting log.
- The statistics cards have no score goals or forecasts of their own and no comparison with other shooters.
- The cards are not exported.
- The numbers describe where shots landed and what they scored. They do not say why.
There is no Pro check on any of these views and no internet or account is needed. Everything is worked out on your phone from your saved sessions. The only limit that reaches them is indirect: the first 10 scans are free, and typed sessions are free and unlimited but give no positions.
Frequently asked questions
4 questions
Do typed sessions count in my statistics?
Yes, in the scores, the counts, the calendar and as earlier sessions in the comparison on a scanned result. They give no group figures, because they have no shot positions.
Why is there no trend line on my home tile?
The line and the figure next to it need at least 3 sessions in the discipline. It then covers your last 10.
Can I see the statistics for one gun?
Not on the trend, quick stats and calendar cards, which have no gun filter. The History list and the analysis report have one.
What does Consistency measure?
How little your series scores vary: 100 minus twice their standard deviation in percent. It needs at least two series. It is not a skill rating.
