Keep every session in one place: the shooting log in the Shooter app

A shooting log is only useful if you can find a session again. In the Shooter app every finished session ends up in the History tab, newest first, whether you scanned the target or typed the shots in. Each row shows the score, the average and the date, and tapping it opens the session.

This article goes through what the list shows, how to filter it, what you can still change after saving, and what the log does not show. How sessions are made is in scoring a target from a photo and logging shots by hand.

What the History list shows

One row per finished session

The list header reads “Sessions” and the number of sessions in the current filter. Sessions are listed newest first, 30 at a time, and more load as you scroll. Only finished sessions are listed. One that is still open is under “In Progress” on the home screen.

  • On the left, a picture of the target with the scanned shots drawn on it, or a keypad icon for a session typed by hand. The session keeps the shot positions, not the photo, so the row shows a drawing of the target.
  • The discipline or course name as the title.
  • A line with the number of finished series times the shots per series, the average per shot and the date.
  • On the right, the score against the maximum, such as 547/600. An ended-early session is measured against the shots actually fired.

The average is the total score divided by the finished series times the shots per series. A shot the scan did not find counts as zero in it.

Filtering the list

Year, discipline, gun, latest sessions

The pill above the list says “Filter · All data” until you narrow it. Tap it to open a sheet with these choices, which apply at once:

  • Year, counted by your local calendar year.
  • Discipline, and then the course of fire, once the discipline has more than one.
  • Latest sessions: 1, 5, 10 or all.
  • Gun, shown only when you have at least one gun.
  • “Only my club sessions”, shown only when at least one session is marked as a club session.

The year, discipline, course, gun and club choices are applied first, and then the newest few are taken. “Latest 5” with the club choice on is therefore your last five club sessions. A gun filter leaves out sessions with no gun recorded. The choice is remembered when you close the app. The History tab, the analysis report and the shooting activity export share it, so a choice on one is on the others. Opening Export from a discipline page sets the shared filter to that discipline.

Opening a session

Overview, then one slide per series

A scanned session opens on an overview with the score, the average, the target and its heat map, and a histogram of the shots. A session with more than one series then has one slide per series. A typed session shows a histogram and one row of shots per series, with no target. See the heat map and statistics for what the scanned views add.

What you can change afterwards

Gun, session type and notes

After a session is saved, you can change the gun, the session type and the notes, and each is saved at once:

  • The gun. There is no row for it in the ⋮ menu. You pick it in the sight adjustment sheet that the MPI tile opens, or with a gun picker where that tile would be on a typed session.
  • The session type, practice, test or match, from the ⋮ menu. It applies to the whole session.
  • The notes, from the ⋮ menu. Notes belong to one series. On a session with several series you reach them from a series slide.
  • The ⋮ menu also has a “Club session” row where you mark the visit as a club session, which the club filter uses.

The ⋮ menu also has “Share as image” for sessions with shot positions, and “Delete Session”. The shots, the ammunition, the scoring mode and the series themselves cannot be changed after saving, and a single series cannot be deleted.

Deleting a session

Swipe, confirm, gone

Swipe a row to the left to reveal a trash button. The swipe alone never deletes. You then confirm in a dialog that says it cannot be undone. Deleting removes the session, its series and their shots from the phone. A backup or an exported file you made earlier is not changed.

What the log does not show

No search, no range in the list
  • There is no search, no other sort order and no way to delete several sessions at once.
  • You cannot filter by practice, test or match.
  • The range is saved with the session when you set it up, but the list and the session screen do not show it. It is in the shooting activity export.
  • Notes are only visible inside the notes sheet, which has a dot in the menu when it holds text. They are not in the CSV or the PDF.
  • The log has no export button of its own. See exporting your data.

Cost, account and internet

Local, no account

The log has no Pro check, no limit on how many sessions it holds and needs no account or internet. Your sessions are stored on your phone only, so a backup is the way to keep them if the phone is lost. The only limit that reaches the log is indirect: the first 10 scans are free, and typed sessions are free and unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

4 questions

Why is my unfinished session not in History?

History lists finished sessions only. An unfinished one is under “In Progress” on the home screen, where “Continue” opens it again.

Can I change the gun on an old session?

Yes. You pick it in the sight adjustment sheet that the MPI tile opens, or with the gun picker on a typed session. It is saved at once.

Is the photo kept with the session?

The session keeps the shot positions, not the photo. The row shows a drawing of the target with the shots found on it.

Are my notes in the exported files?

No. The CSV and the PDF activity log do not include notes. They are readable only in the notes sheet of the session.
