Target Rifle Australia runs smallbore (.22 rimfire) and air rifle shooting through its state associations and clubs; Shooting Australia picks the Olympic teams. Prone is the most contested event, shot not only at 50 m but at two Australian distances, 20 and 90 m, and benchrest — any scoped .22, fully rested — is growing fast.
Most club and state matches are graded A to D, so beginners are ranked against their own level, and they usually start from a supporting frame: holding the rifle unsupported is a milestone. Only factory standard-velocity .22 Long Rifle with soft lead bullets is allowed.
