Keep your guns, licence numbers and sight clicks in one place

A gun in the Shooter app starts as a name. Everything else is optional and added afterwards on the gun’s own page: how many clicks your sights move, which ammunition you usually shoot, and the licence details you want to keep at hand.

This article lists exactly what a gun record holds, how it is used, and where the licence number and weapon ID can be seen outside the app. The licence renewal date and the activity requirement you set yourself are described in range days per gun. Our licence guides are a separate section of the blog: the licence guides.

Adding a gun

A name, nothing more

On the home screen, under “My guns”, there is one tile per gun and a last tile, “Add gun”. The new-gun form has one field, “Name”, and a note that sights and licence come later. You can also create a gun from the “Details” block when setting up a session, and it is selected right away.

Tap a gun’s tile to open its page. There is no Save button on an existing gun: changes are written a moment after you stop typing, and if a write fails the form rolls back and tells you.

What a gun record holds

The fields, one by one
  • Name.
  • Sights: iron sights or optic, a unit (mm, MRAD or MOA), and a click value, either one for both axes or separate windage and elevation. A click value must be above zero, or left empty.
  • Default ammunition: “None” or one of the ammunition types in the app’s list. Picking the gun when you set up a session fills in that ammunition, unless you already chose one.
  • Under “License details”: weapon group, licence number and weapon ID, all free text. The app does not check them against anything. Weapon group is whatever you type.
  • The licence renewal date and activity requirement, described in range days per gun.

There is no separate field for make, model, caliber, purchase date or a photo, and no round counter or maintenance log. The Weapon ID field takes whatever number you want to keep for the weapon.

Sight clicks

Used after a series of 5 shots or more

With click values saved, the summary of a series of at least 5 shots can show a “Sights” chip when the group sits off-centre, and a sheet with the clicks to move, for example some clicks right and some up. Both axes need a click value. Without them the sheet says the gun has none saved and offers to add them, and with no gun picked it asks you to pick one.

A click value in mm is read as measured at 10 m, while MOA and MRAD are angles. The clicks are a suggestion worked out from the shots on the target and the click value you saved, not a correction you can count on. They are recalculated when you look, so changing a gun’s click values also changes the clicks shown for its past sessions.

Where the record is used

Setup, statistics, club check-in
  • Session setup: the “Gun” row lists your guns, and a single saved gun is pre-selected.
  • Statistics: the filter has a “Guns” dropdown with each gun’s session count. A gun filter leaves out sessions without a gun. See statistics from your sessions.
  • Club check-in: the code carries the gun’s name, its weapon group as text, and one-way codes made from the licence number and weapon ID, not the numbers. See club check-in.

Where the licence number and weapon ID go

On the phone, in the backup, in the exports

The app does not send the licence number, weapon group or weapon ID to Shooter. In a club check-in code the licence number and weapon ID cannot be read, because only a one-way code made from each travels. The weapon group is the exception: it goes to the club’s phone as text, together with the gun’s name. All three are on your phone and in your own files:

  • In a backup you make, which is a copy of your data. See back up and restore.
  • In your phone’s own automatic device backup, if you have that switched on.
  • In the CSV of every shot, in the columns license_number, weapon_group and weapon_identifier.
  • Printed in the header of the activity PDF, under “Weapon numbers”, so that a filtered export still carries them. See export your shooting data.

Exported files and backups contain these numbers as you typed them, so check where you send them.

Archiving and deleting

Archive keeps the history

In the ⋯ menu of a gun’s page, “Archive gun” hides it from the list and the pickers and stops its licence reminders. Its sessions stay in your history, and “Restore gun” brings it back with its reminders. An archived gun can be deleted for good from the list. Sessions shot with it keep their scores, but no longer show a click suggestion.

Frequently asked questions

4 questions

Do I have to fill in the licence number?

No. Every field except the name is optional, and a gun with only a name works normally.

Does Shooter get my licence number or weapon ID?

No, the app does not send them to Shooter. They are on your phone, in the backups and exports you make yourself, and in your phone’s own automatic device backup if you have that switched on.

Can I store make, model or caliber?

No. A gun has a name, sights, default ammunition and the licence fields listed above.

Where do I find all my guns?

On the home screen under “My guns”. Archived guns are shown from the ⋯ menu of the full guns list, which you reach from a gun’s activity card.
