How it is shot

Tournaments · Time and sighters · Classes · Ammunition · Gauging · Shots per bull · Ties
Tournaments
A tournament can be a short meet (25 shots for record at 50 yards and 25 at 100 yards), a half meet (two 25-bull cards at one distance) or a full meet (four cards at one distance).IBS rules V.D.1 to V.D.3
Time and sighters
Each 25-bull card is a match of at most 20 minutes. Sighters are unlimited: a shooter may go from sighters to record bulls and back as often as he likes within the time.IBS rules V.D.7 and V.D.8
Classes
Rifles compete in three classes: Unlimited (any .22 Long Rifle firearm, with no weight limit and no limits on barrel, stock or scope), Custom (at most 15 lb with its optics) and Factory (a magazine- or tube-fed .22 in production, readily available, under $1,450 MSRP).IBS rules V.A.1 to V.A.3
Ammunition
Only factory-loaded .22 Long Rifle may be used, of a brand sold over the counter to anyone, with its original, unaltered case, powder and bullet. Hand loads are banned, and so is removing, replacing or adding lubricant.IBS rules V.C.1 and V.C.2
Gauging
Cards are scored best edge. Bulls may be shot in any order, but the miss-and-out tie-break follows the bull numbers printed on the card, from 1 to 25.IBS rules V.F.1 and V.F.2
Shots per bull
Unless there is an identifiable crossfire, an empty bull scores 0 and a bull with more than one shot scores its lowest. A shot touching the sighter bounding box counts as a sighter.IBS rules V.F.5 to V.F.7
Ties
Match ties are decided by score, then X count, then miss-and-out from bull 1 to bull 25, the dropping of an X, a 10, a 9 and so on. A tie still standing goes to the miss-and-out of the next match.IBS rule V.G.1

The Shooter app's scan screen, shown with an ISSF 10m Air Pistol card: each shot marked, the score, and the size and centre of the group

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.

Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
