NRA A-27 50yd Rifle target

The A-27 lets a range measured in yards shoot the metric stage of NRA Conventional Prone: it is the metric target reduced for the shorter yard distance, five shots to a bull. Forty shots on it count toward the same national record as forty on the A-26, and in the NRA's one-day Conventional Prone this match is fired with any sights.

NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program

The NRA dates the programme to 1903 and measures shooters against par scores in 23 qualifications, from BB gun to shotgun and multi-gun. Awards are ordered from the NRA’s Program Materials Center: the discipline’s patch at the start, then a rocker, medal, pin and certificate for each rating. NRA members who reach Distinguished Expert get its packet free, and those who earn it in 2 or 3 of rifle, pistol and shotgun become Double or Triple Distinguished.

Ratings are earned in order, from Pro-Marksman up, at the shooter’s own pace; a score counts only toward the rating being worked on and cannot be held for a higher one, and the repetitions need not be fired in a row or in one session. Distinguished Expert firing is witnessed by an NRA member, instructor or coach, unless it is shot in competition.

How it is shot

Course · Records · Sights · X ring · Ties · Same-hole shots
Course
The match is 40 shots, or 20 in the short form, five to a bull; targets are customarily changed after each 20 shots, with the same time, one minute per record shot, for both halves.NRA rules 7.1, 7.2, 7.2.1 and 8.2(b)
Records
40 shots on this card at 50 yd count toward the same national record as 40 on the A-26 at 50 m, and either is one of the four matches of the 1600 aggregate.NRA rule 17.5(a)(3) and (5)
Sights
In the NRA's one-day Conventional Prone, this match is fired with any sights, while the 50 yd A-23 match and the Dewar use metallic sights.NRA rule 7.6
X ring
Any hole touching the outside edge of the X ring counts as an X. X's break ties first, rank scores and set national records in outdoor conventional prone.NRA rules 14.3(c) and 15.7.1
Ties
Prone ties still level on X's go to the last stage, then bull by bull from the last; failing that, X's of higher value, holes clear of the X ring's edge, are counted and the steps repeated.NRA rules 14.3(e) and 15.7.1(a)
Same-hole shots
If three or more shots group so that a required shot could have gone through the enlarged hole unseen, and nothing shows it went elsewhere, the shooter gets the benefit of the doubt, any such hit scoring in the higher of two possible rings.NRA rule 14.9

The Shooter app's scan screen, shown with an ISSF 10m Air Pistol card: each shot marked, the score, and the size and centre of the group

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.

Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
