NSRA Proficiency Badges
The NSRA’s proficiency scheme covers 11 disciplines, from air pistol to benchrest rifle and sport crossbow, and a shooter may enter as often as they like. A claim should say whether a lower award would be accepted, in case the score claimed is not confirmed. The numbered NSRA card stickers cost £3.00 for a set of 12, at least 5 sets an order, and unused sets stay valid in later years; the badge is bought separately.
Open to all; NSRA membership is not needed. Each card carries an NSRA sticker put on before shooting, a discipline’s set of cards is shot within four weeks (or within the NSRA postal competition it is shot alongside), and the cards go to the NSRA to be scored. A badge is claimed for the class the score reaches, by 31 January the following year. Juniors must be under the age on the day they shoot, and may also claim senior classes. (Booklet pp. 2–3.)

How it is shot
Pistol league · Tiger Trophy · Time · Sights · Gauging · Excess shots · Ties
- Pistol league
- In the NSRA’s Individual Pistol league, each round is 20 shots at 20 yards on this card (or at 50 m on the PL7); .177 or .22 air pistols and free pistols may be used.NSRA Summer Competitions Booklet 2025, competition 375
- Tiger Trophy
- The Tiger Trophy is 30 shots at 20 yards on this card, shot in one day, in three classes by average. Air pistols (.177 or .22) and free pistols may be used, and there is no minimum trigger weight.NSRA Summer Competitions Booklet 2025, competition 370
- Time
- Each 10-shot series has 10 minutes unless the competition’s rules state otherwise. In deliberate postal competitions there is no time limit for a card or series, provided the competition’s total time is not exceeded.NSRA rules 7.4.3 and 9.5.6.6
- Sights
- Sights must be open, with no aperture, peep, covered, shaded or telescope sights; a fixed or iris aperture worn by the shooter, not attached to the pistol, is allowed.NSRA rules 9.2.4 and 9.2.5
- Gauging
- Pistol cards are gauged inward: the edge of the hole nearest the centre sets the value, and when the gauge’s flange touches a line, the higher value counts. Shots outside the scoring rings have no value.NSRA rule 5.1.6
- Excess shots
- Shots outside the correct target’s scoring rings, and cross-shots, are misses. Firing more shots on a target than allowed disallows that many of the highest-value shots and costs one point per extra shot.NSRA rules 5.4.1 and 5.4.4
- Ties
- Ties for prizes in kind at a single range go to the higher last 10-shot series, counting back; then to the most 10s, 9s, 8s and so on; then the shooter whose last target has the shot farthest from the centre loses.NSRA rule 5.6.3.1

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.
Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
