Move your TargetScan history over: what comes across and what does not

If you have been scoring with TargetScan, the sessions are worth keeping. The Shooter app can read a TargetScan backup file and turn it into sessions in your history, so your statistics and trends do not start from zero.

This article goes through the steps, what a TargetScan session becomes in Shooter and what is left behind. Once the sessions are in, they are like any other: see your shooting log and statistics from your sessions.

How the import works

Pick the file, a discipline and a target
  1. Open Profile, then Data & transfer, then “Import from TargetScan”. On an empty History or Analysis screen, the word “import” in the text is a link to the same place.
  2. Tap “Choose backup (.bak)” and pick the TargetScan backup file on your phone.
  3. The app shows one card for each discipline in the file, with the number of sessions and shots, the dates and the scoring. Pick one discipline. You import one at a time.
  4. Choose the Shooter target that matches. You choose from the full list of targets; the app does not suggest one.
  5. Look at the preview: your shots drawn on the target you picked, up to 200 of them. Tap “Import this discipline” or change the target.
  6. The summary shows the total score of what was imported and how many sessions and shots came in. You can import another discipline from there.

The file has to be a TargetScan backup in version 3 of its format. The app does not explain how to make one in TargetScan, so make it there first. The picker shows every kind of file, so check that you pick the right one.

What a TargetScan session becomes

One session per day, one series per paper
  • TargetScan keeps one visit to the range as several sessions. Shooter merges them into one session for each date.
  • Each target paper in a visit becomes one series. A paper whose shots are identical to another one in the same visit is dropped as a duplicate. The summary does not list these.
  • The session sits on the day it was shot, by your phone’s local clock.
  • Notes are kept. If a visit had several notes, they are joined, one under the other.
  • The session is named like a scanned one, after the target. TargetScan’s own session title is not kept.
  • Mean radius and extreme spread are worked out for each series.

Shooter works the scores out again from the shot positions on the target you picked. TargetScan’s own scores are not read. If you pick a target other than the one you shot on, the scores will differ from what TargetScan showed, and the preview is the only check. The app reads the positions in the file as millimetres and does not convert them. If the preview shows the shots in the wrong place, do not import that discipline.

What is left behind

Misses, guns, ranges, photos
  • Misses. Only shots that hit the target come in. The summary says how many misses were skipped. A series with no hit is left out, and so is a visit with no hit at all.
  • Guns, ranges, ammunition and photos. None of them is read from the file, so add them afterwards if you want them. See gun records in the app.
  • TargetScan’s settings and its own scores.

Imported sessions look like any other session in History, and there is no way to undo an import as a whole. You can delete the sessions one at a time.

Importing the same file again

Already imported visits are skipped

Running the import twice does not add the same visit twice. The app recognises a visit by its discipline and date and skips the ones already in, so a visit with the same discipline and date as one already imported is skipped. A discipline card says “Already imported” when some of its visits are in, and is greyed out when nothing is left to import. A discipline with no shot on the target shows “No shots” and cannot be imported.

While the import is writing, the screen shows a spinner and the back button does nothing. Wait for the summary.

What leaves the phone

A small report per discipline

The import itself runs on the phone. The file, sessions, shots, scores, dates and notes are not uploaded. It needs no account and no internet.

After an import the app queues one small report for each discipline and sends it in the background when there is a connection. The report holds the shape of the discipline (shots per series, number of series, scoring method and similar) and the Shooter target you picked. If Link usage data is on, it also holds your random device identifier. If it is off, the report is sent without it. The privacy policy has the details under “Import mapping votes”.

Besides that report, the app’s usage statistics note that an import happened, with the discipline, the target you picked and how many sessions and shots came in. If the import fails, a crash report is sent. The report also holds TargetScan’s version numbers.

Cost, account and errors

No account, no scan used

The import needs no account and does not use up any of the first 10 free scans. If the file cannot be read, the app says so: it is not a TargetScan backup, it is damaged, it comes from an unsupported version of TargetScan or it is not in the expected format. A very large backup file cannot be opened. In that case, and for any other problem while reading, you get the general “Import failed. Please try again.”

Frequently asked questions

4 questions

Which TargetScan files does Shooter read?

Only a TargetScan backup file (.bak) in version 3 of its format. Backups from other apps, or from other versions of TargetScan, are not read.

Will my scores be the same as in TargetScan?

Not always. Shooter works the scores out again from the shot positions on the target you pick. A different target gives different scores. Compare the preview with what you remember before you import.

Are my misses imported?

No. Only shots that hit the target come in, and the summary tells you how many misses were skipped.

Does the app send my TargetScan sessions anywhere?

The import runs on the phone and the sessions are not uploaded. Only a small report about the shape of the discipline and the target you picked, and usage statistics that note an import happened, are sent in the background.
