DSB proficiency and master marksman badges

The DSB gives its performance badges each year to reward results and to encourage shooting for performance. A badge result can also count as the coordination test of the German Sports Badge (Deutsches Sportabzeichen) the same year. Clubs order the badges on a form at the end of each quarter, through their district, from their state association; in 2026 a small badge cost €4.00, a large one €4.50 and the master marksman badge €6.50.

Age classes go by the age reached in the calendar year, the DSB’s sport year.

  • Rings in one match of the shots given, at a club shooting day or any DSB competition, announced to the range officer before the start and shot under supervision; one condition a day, no second try that day.
  • The small badge takes the score once; the large badge, after the small one of the same colour, five times within a year.
  • Only DSB-approved cards count.
  • Female juniors take 5 rings off the junior numbers, as the table’s footnote says (worked out in the Junioren weiblich table); a class with no number may shoot the next stronger class’s.

How it is shot

Course · Crossbow · Wind indicators · Malfunctions · Gauging · Ties
Course
The match is 30 shots standing, then 30 kneeling — which may be shot sitting from the Herren II/Damen II classes on — with 90 minutes for each half, one bolt to a card, and 30 minutes to change over.DSB rule 0.21; Teil 5, pp. 1 and 17
Crossbow
The 30 m crossbow has a bolt guide and slide and fires 6.0 mm bolts (+0/−0.05 mm). A hook butt plate is allowed, and a palm rest when standing; kneeling, two cushions or a cushion and a kneeling roll may be used.DSB rule 5.8; Teil 5, p. 17
Wind indicators
Before the match each shooter may set up as many as two wind indicators, which may not be removed until the match is over.DSB rule 5.6
Malfunctions
After a recognised crossbow defect the shooter gets at most 20 minutes of repair time in all, any number of extra sighting shots, and extra time set by the range officer.DSB rules 5.4.3 and 5.4.4
Gauging
Doubtful hits are judged with an outward gauge — a 17.90 mm measuring ring on a 6.00 mm spindle — always used with the scoring plate; oval, oversized or deformed holes that leave doubt are measured from their centre.DSB rules 0.11.3.2 and 5.3.2
Ties
Ties are broken by the last ten-shot series, counting back, then the most 10s, 9s, 8s and so on, then the most inner tens; otherwise the rank is shared, except in rested events. Equal maximum scores stay tied unless a final is shot.DSB rule 0.12.1

The Shooter app's scan screen, shown with an ISSF 10m Air Pistol card: each shot marked, the score, and the size and centre of the group

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your inner tens, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.

Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
