NRA MR-52 200yd Rifle target
The MR-52 scales the Mid-Range MR-1 down so that the prone slow-fire stage of NRA High Power’s National Match Course, normally fired at 600 yd, can be shot at a reduced distance. With the SR and SR-42 the whole course can then be fired at one distance, and NRA keeps national records for that version.

NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program
The NRA dates the programme to 1903 and measures shooters against par scores in 23 qualifications, from BB gun to shotgun and multi-gun. Awards are ordered from the NRA’s Program Materials Center: the discipline’s patch at the start, then a rocker, medal, pin and certificate for each rating. NRA members who reach Distinguished Expert get its packet free, and those who earn it in 2 or 3 of rifle, pistol and shotgun become Double or Triple Distinguished.
Ratings are earned in order, from Pro-Marksman up, at the shooter’s own pace; a score counts only toward the rating being worked on and cannot be held for a higher one, and the repetitions need not be fired in a row or in one session. Distinguished Expert firing is witnessed by an NRA member, instructor or coach, unless it is shot in competition.

How it is shot
Course · National Match · Regional Course · Time · Perfect scores · Ties
- Course
- On its own it carries 10- or 20-shot prone slow-fire matches at 200 yd, which NRA marks as a reduced target and distance course.NRA rule 7.8
- National Match
- At 200 yd the whole 50-shot National Match Course can be fired on three cards — SR for standing and sitting or kneeling, SR-42 for prone rapid, MR-52 for 20 shots prone slow — and NRA keeps national records for it.NRA rule 17.5(l)
- Regional Course
- In the 200 yd 100-shot Regional Course the prone slow-fire stage is fired twice, so 40 of the 100 shots go on the MR-52.NRA rules 7.16 and 17.5(n)
- Time
- Slow fire allows one minute per shot, sighters included when specified; in the national-record courses on this card two sighters are fired and recorded in each stage, so a 20-shot stage runs 22 minutes.NRA rules 8.1, 8.2(a) and 17.5
- Perfect scores
- A shooter who fires a perfect score, all X’s, in an individual match fires on until a shot leaves the X ring; the extra shots are recorded apart from the total, as in 200-20X plus 3X.NRA rule 9.7
- Ties
- Ties go first to the most X’s over the course, then to the higher score and more X’s at the longest or simulated longest range, which in a National Match Course fired at 200 yd is the MR-52 stage.NRA rules 4.3(c) and 15.4

- X ring
- The X is an inner circle that breaks ties without changing the total: the highest value on an NRA high power target is 10, so the inner circle is marked X, the Roman numeral ten.NRA Glossary, “X” Ring

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.
Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
