NRA SR-42 200yd Rifle target

The SR-42 scales down the SR-3 rapid-fire target so that the prone rapid-fire stage of NRA High Power’s National Match Course can be shot at a reduced distance: ten shots in 70 seconds, reloading after the second or fifth. With the SR and MR-52 the whole course can be fired at one distance, with national records kept for it.

NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program

The NRA dates the programme to 1903 and measures shooters against par scores in 23 qualifications, from BB gun to shotgun and multi-gun. Awards are ordered from the NRA’s Program Materials Center: the discipline’s patch at the start, then a rocker, medal, pin and certificate for each rating. NRA members who reach Distinguished Expert get its packet free, and those who earn it in 2 or 3 of rifle, pistol and shotgun become Double or Triple Distinguished.

Ratings are earned in order, from Pro-Marksman up, at the shooter’s own pace; a score counts only toward the rating being worked on and cannot be held for a higher one, and the repetitions need not be fired in a row or in one session. Distinguished Expert firing is witnessed by an NRA member, instructor or coach, unless it is shot in competition.

How it is shot

Course · Time · Sighters · Reloading · Pit marking · Extra hits
Course
On its own it carries 10- or 20-shot prone rapid-fire matches at 200 yd, which NRA marks as a reduced target and distance course; national records are kept for 20 shots.NRA rules 7.7 and 17.5(j)
Time
A 10-shot rapid-fire string allows 70 seconds prone, against 60 seconds sitting or kneeling.NRA rule 8.2(b)
Sighters
If the match allows sighters, they come first: two slow-fire sighters in a two-minute period, loaded one round at a time; any sighter not fired in that time is recorded as a miss in the sighter space.NRA rules 9.2(d) and 10.7
Reloading
In rapid fire the shooter loads 2 or 5 rounds when the targets appear and, after firing them, reloads 8 or 5. Reloading before the 2nd or 5th shot is fired scores zero for the whole 10-shot string.NRA rule 10.1.7
Pit marking
Where targets are scored in the pits, rapid-fire hits are signalled only after the string: spotters go into the hits and a chalk board hung on the frame shows how many hits of each value were scored.NRA rules 14.1(b) and 14.18(b)
Extra hits
When a shooter fires all ten rapid-fire shots in time and 11 or 12 hits appear on the target, the ten highest count, with no option to refire.NRA rule 14.10(c)(3)

The card

X ring
The X is an inner circle that breaks ties without changing the total: the highest value on an NRA high power target is 10, so the inner circle is marked X, the Roman numeral ten.NRA Glossary, “X” Ring

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.

Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
