NRA B-40 10m Air Pistol target

The B-40 is the NRA’s print of the international air pistol target, shot under its International Style Pistol Rules and in the air pistol ratings of the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. Men fire 60 shots; a 40-shot course is kept for women, junior women and collegiate women, and the best eight shoot a ten-shot final added to the qualification score. The same card is also used as the DSB Nr.7 10m Air Pistol (DSB, Germany), the ISSF 10m Air Pistol (ISSF) and the SPSF 10m Air Pistol (SPSF, Sweden).

CMP Achievement Awards

Every CMP rulebook, from air gun and smallbore to service rifle, pistol and the CMP Games, sets achievement awards as an incentive to take part and improve. In EIC matches, shooters already Distinguished, who earn no more credit points, still compete for achievement pins. If extreme weather lowers every score in a CMP Games match, or many competitors are new, the match director may lower the bronze score, but not below the 40th-percentile competitor.

Gold, silver or bronze for equalling or exceeding the cut score in one match at a CMP-sanctioned or CMP-run competition. The cut scores come from earlier national championship scores, set so that roughly the top 40 percent of competitors earn an award: the top sixth of them gold, the next two sixths silver, the rest bronze.

NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program

The NRA dates the programme to 1903 and measures shooters against par scores in 23 qualifications, from BB gun to shotgun and multi-gun. Awards are ordered from the NRA’s Program Materials Center: the discipline’s patch at the start, then a rocker, medal, pin and certificate for each rating. NRA members who reach Distinguished Expert get its packet free, and those who earn it in 2 or 3 of rifle, pistol and shotgun become Double or Triple Distinguished.

Ratings are earned in order, from Pro-Marksman up, at the shooter’s own pace; a score counts only toward the rating being worked on and cannot be held for a higher one, and the repetitions need not be fired in a row or in one session. Distinguished Expert firing is witnessed by an NRA member, instructor or coach, unless it is shot in competition.

How it is shot

Course · Sighters · Time · Shots per card · Final · Gauging · Ties
Course
The match is 60 shots for all men and for women who choose to fire as open competitors; the 40-shot course is only for women, junior women and collegiate women, and may also be used in some co-ed collegiate competitions.NRA rule 7.5(a)
Sighters
A 15-minute set-up period is followed by 15 minutes of preparation and sighting with unlimited sighting shots on up to four sighting targets; once the first match shot is fired, no more sighters are allowed unless the Jury or Referee permits.NRA rules 7.5(d), 10.15(f) and 10.15(i)
Time
Match time is 1 hour 30 minutes for 60 shots on paper (1 hour 15 minutes on electronic targets) and 1 hour for 40 shots (50 minutes electronic); a sponsor may set less, down to 1.5 minutes per record shot, if the program says so.NRA rules 10.15(l) and 10.15(m)
Shots per card
Only one shot is fired on each competition target; in registered competition a sponsor may allow up to five per target if the program says so, but such scores do not count for national records.NRA rule 10.15(d)
Final
In the final the best eight fire 10 single shots on command, 75 seconds each, scored in tenths; the final score is added to the qualification score.NRA rules 7.10(a), 7.10(k) and 7.10(l)
Gauging
Close shots are measured with a .177 to .179 in (4.5 to 4.55 mm) plug gauge; on 10 m air pistol targets an outward gauge of 11.45 to 11.5 mm may be used instead.NRA rules 14.3(a) and 14.3(b)
Ties
Ties for the first ten places go first to the higher score in the last 10 shots, then in the other 10-shot strings, then to the most 10s, 9s, 8s and so on, then the most inner tens; ties between perfect scores are not broken.NRA rules 15.2 and 15.3
