NRA FC 500yd Rifle target

The MR-65FC is the F-Class centre pasted over the Mid-Range MR-65, adding a smaller X ring and moving every old ring down one value. It is the middle distance of F-Class Mid-Range: 20 shots fired prone from a rest or bipod, one minute a shot with two sighters counted in.

NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program

The NRA dates the programme to 1903 and measures shooters against par scores in 23 qualifications, from BB gun to shotgun and multi-gun. Awards are ordered from the NRA’s Program Materials Center: the discipline’s patch at the start, then a rocker, medal, pin and certificate for each rating. NRA members who reach Distinguished Expert get its packet free, and those who earn it in 2 or 3 of rifle, pistol and shotgun become Double or Triple Distinguished.

Ratings are earned in order, from Pro-Marksman up, at the shooter’s own pace; a score counts only toward the rating being worked on and cannot be held for a higher one, and the repetitions need not be fired in a row or in one session. Distinguished Expert firing is witnessed by an NRA member, instructor or coach, unless it is shot in competition.

  • Points over the shots given, prone, one cartridge loaded at a time; Times is how many such scores.
  • A mid-range aggregate is 15 or 20 shots at each of 300, 500 and 600 yards on one day, a long-range one the same at 800, 900 and 1,000; an aggregate short of the score is refired whole.
  • Distinguished Expert takes 10 aggregates, "or 5 NRA sanctioned F-Class competitions" (as printed).
  • Any centrefire rifle and rest as the F-Class rules allow.
  • Cards: the MR-63FC, MR-65FC, MR-1FC and LRFC centres on their full targets, or the MR-31 at 100 yards and the MR-52 at 200.
  • Open to everyone, NRA members or not.

How it is shot

Rests · Rifle classes · Course · Time · Fullbore matches · Electronic targets · Ties
Rests
F-Class is fired prone from the shoulder, the rifle on a front and/or rear rest or on a bipod and/or sling with a rear rest; the rules call it a modification of High Power prone, not a form of bench rest.NRA rules 3.2 and 5.4
Rifle classes
F-Open rifles may be of any calibre up to .35; F-TR rifles are limited to unmodified .308 Win/7.62 NATO or .223 Rem/5.56 NATO cases and are fired off a bipod and/or sling.NRA rules 3.1(a) and 3.1(b)
Course
The F-Class match here is 20 shots prone in slow fire, and the 60-shot F-Class Mid-Range Course fires 20 shots each at 300 yd (MR-63FC), 500 (MR-65FC) and 600 (MR-1FC).NRA rules 7.15 and 7.20
Time
Time is one minute per shot, sighters included when specified, and each match is announced as two sighters plus the record shots — 22 minutes for a 20-shot match.NRA rules 8.1, 8.2(a) and 10.7
Fullbore matches
F-Class Fullbore matches here are 10 or 15 shots. On day 2 of the F-Class Fullbore Mid-Range National Championship three 15-shot individual matches, fired two or three to a firing point, and a team match are shot here, all with two convertible sighters.NRA Sec. 22, rules 7.2 and 7.11
Electronic targets
On electronic targets each shot appears on the firing-point monitor only after a mandatory 7-second delay, and any shot fired during the delay is a record shot scored as a miss; team matches and Bisley-style firing are exempt.NRA rule 10.17(h)
Ties
Ties go to the most X’s over the course, then to the higher score at the longest (or simulated longest) range; still level, fewest misses, fewest low hits, and finally the hits compared one by one from the last.NRA rule 15.4

The Shooter app's scan screen, shown with an ISSF 10m Air Pistol card: each shot marked, the score, and the size and centre of the group

Training on paper? Photograph a card and the Shooter app finds the holes and scores them by these rings: every shot, your X count, the series total, your group’s size and centre. Holes merged? Add, move or remove a shot. Every card joins your training log, so drift shows up over time.

Scored with AI for now, which needs internet and your permission to upload the photo to an AI service in the US. Some AI scans may be free while we collect photos of this target; then each uses an AI credit (sold in packs in the app). Scoring by hand is free.
